Riverside Stray Dog CentreSince moving to Bulgaria in Eastern Europe 3 years ago we have become increasingly concerned about both the plight of stray dogs in Eastern Europe and particularly the chain dog culture that exists with owned dogs here. During our time in Bulgaria we have
inherited 5 street dogs which are now a key part of our life. We have been
keen supporters of The Bulgarian Society for Animal Protection &
Preservation, which are one of the very few organisations in Bulgaria
currently looking after the welfare of animals, so deciding to dedicate
our future to helping stray dogs has been a natural transition. We currently feed and provide basic care for any street dog in need. We occasionally re-home any that we feel are not able to make it on the street, however we try wherever possible not to re-home as finding caring homes in an ex-communist country whose people have been taught that animals do not feel pain is an enormous task. We also take in dogs from other shelters to treat serious cases with natural and homeopathic treatment such as Shakira who had life threatening severe mange, and now disabled Sarka. We are also very much dedicated to the E.U. directive to Trap-Neuter-Return street dogs so that the numbers are gradually reduced humanely. To enable us to put a proper programme together, we are now putting all our resources and energy into building a dog sanctuary, which will allow us to provide post-operative care before the dogs are returned to their 'patch'. We are very grateful to everyone who has supported our efforts to date and thank you in advance for your continued support.
